When concluding the reading of The Beetle by Richard Marsh, my final thoughts of The Beetle is that this ancient Egyptian entity had a vengeful purpose in mind and was drawn to England to enact revenge on Holt. It is also shown that this Entity tends to take on a she/her persona, as the “Woman Of Songs” for a cult of isis and was forgotten by human history. However I believe that this is one of the hardest novels we have read, and has a challenging character to analyze being the Beetle. Even towards the end of the novel, this entity is still very misunderstood in its goals and overall purpose besides upbringing chaos.
I compared this novel more to Dracula, our next novel, because of the similarities but also differences between the two. As Dracula is a fully understood character while the Beetle is not, these two novels were released in the same year and are often compared. I found this interesting as Dracula is typically compared to monsters in movies and novels like Frankenstein, the Wolfman, and other well known monsters. I think why the beetle is not compared to the rest of these well known names is the deeper in depth analysis of a character that is almost completely misunderstood throughout the novel. The Beetle’s entity or enigma relies more on its hypnotic and mental anguish as to the external fears of something unnatural or horrifying like a Dracula.
